The "Firecraft Fundamentals" class is a comprehensive workshop designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to confidently build and maintain fires in various outdoor environments. Whether you're a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a beginner camper, mastering firecraft is a critical survival skill that enhances safety, comfort, and self-reliance in the wilderness. Led by experienced outdoor instructors, this hands-on course covers everything from fire-building techniques to fire safety protocols, ensuring participants leave with the confidence to build fires responsibly and effectively in any situation.

Class Objectives:

  1. Understanding Fire Principles: Participants will gain a deep understanding of the principles of fire, including the components necessary for ignition, combustion, and sustainable fire growth.

  2. Firewood Selection and Preparation: Learn how to identify and collect suitable firewood, as well as techniques for processing and preparing fuel to optimize fire efficiency and longevity.

  3. Fire-Building Techniques: Explore a variety of fire-building methods, including teepee, log cabin, lean-to, and Dakota fire pit, and understand when each technique is most appropriate.

  4. Fire Ignition Methods: Master various fire ignition methods, including friction-based methods (such as bow drill and hand drill), flint and steel, ferrocerium rods, and modern fire starters.

  5. Fire Safety and Responsibility: Understand essential fire safety practices, including site selection, fire containment, extinguishing techniques, and Leave No Trace principles to minimize environmental impact.

  6. Fire Management and Maintenance: Learn how to monitor and manage a fire, including techniques for adjusting airflow, adding fuel, and controlling flame intensity to maintain a sustainable fire.

  7. Adverse Conditions and Emergency Firecraft: Develop skills for building fires in adverse weather conditions, such as rain or wind, and learn emergency firecraft techniques for survival situations.

  8. Hands-On Practice: Engage in practical, hands-on activities to reinforce learned skills, including fire-building challenges, fire-starting competitions, and simulated survival scenarios.
