The American Heart Association's Heartsaver First Aid course is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively respond to common first aid emergencies in both home and workplace settings. This comprehensive course covers a range of topics, including medical emergencies, injury management, and environmental emergencies, equipping participants with the confidence and competence to provide immediate care until professional medical help arrives. Heartsaver First Aid is suitable for lay rescuers, workplace responders, teachers, coaches, childcare providers, and anyone interested in learning basic first aid techniques.

Course Objectives:

  1. Assessment and Emergency Action: Learn how to assess the scene of an emergency, recognize the signs and symptoms of medical emergencies, and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of the victim and rescuer.

  2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Master basic CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants, including chest compressions, rescue breaths, and the proper compression-to-ventilation ratio.

  3. Choking Management: Understand how to recognize and respond to choking emergencies in adults, children, and infants, including the appropriate techniques for performing abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) and chest thrusts.

  4. Bleeding Control: Learn techniques for controlling bleeding from various types of wounds, including direct pressure, elevation, and the use of pressure dressings and tourniquets.

  5. Wound Care: Gain knowledge of wound care principles, including wound cleaning, dressing application, and infection prevention measures to promote optimal wound healing.

  6. Medical Emergencies: Develop skills for recognizing and responding to common medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, seizures, allergic reactions, and diabetic emergencies, including appropriate first aid interventions and when to seek professional medical assistance.

  7. Injury Management: Learn how to assess and manage common injuries such as fractures, sprains, strains, burns, and head injuries, including immobilization techniques and pain management strategies.

  8. Environmental Emergencies: Understand the signs and symptoms of environmental emergencies such as heat-related illnesses, hypothermia, and frostbite, and learn appropriate first aid measures for managing these conditions.

  9. Hands-On Practice: Engage in practical, hands-on skills practice sessions using manikins and first aid supplies to reinforce first aid techniques and build confidence in responding to real-life emergencies.

  10. Written Examination: Complete a written examination to assess knowledge retention and understanding of first aid concepts covered in the course.
