The American Heart Association's Heartsaver CPR AED course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively respond to cardiac emergencies, including sudden cardiac arrest, heart attacks, and choking incidents. This course is suitable for lay rescuers, workplace responders, childcare providers, school staff, and anyone interested in learning basic life-saving techniques. Participants will learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques for adults, children, and infants, as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver a potentially life-saving shock to individuals experiencing cardiac arrest.

Course Objectives:

  1. Cardiac Arrest Recognition: Learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest, including unresponsiveness, absence of normal breathing, and lack of pulse.

  2. CPR Techniques: Master the skills necessary to perform high-quality CPR on adults, children, and infants, including chest compressions, rescue breaths, and the proper compression-to-ventilation ratio.

  3. AED Operation: Understand how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely and effectively, including how to apply electrode pads, analyze heart rhythms, and deliver a shock when indicated.

  4. Choking Emergencies: Learn how to recognize and respond to choking emergencies in adults, children, and infants, including the appropriate techniques for performing abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) and chest thrusts.

  5. Team Dynamics: Develop skills for effective teamwork and communication during cardiac emergencies, including roles and responsibilities of rescuers, leadership strategies, and coordination of CPR and AED efforts.

  6. Hands-On Practice: Engage in practical, hands-on skills practice sessions using manikins and AED training devices to reinforce CPR and AED techniques and build confidence in responding to real-life emergencies.

  7. Written Examination: Complete a written examination to assess knowledge retention and understanding of CPR and AED concepts covered in the course.

Target Audience:

  • Lay rescuers
  • Workplace responders
  • Childcare providers
  • School staff
  • Fitness instructors
  • Anyone interested in learning basic life-saving skills

Duration: The Heartsaver CPR AED course typically lasts between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the depth of content coverage and the specific needs of participants.

Outcome: Participants who successfully complete the Heartsaver CPR AED course will receive certification from the American Heart Association, indicating their competence in performing CPR and using an AED in emergency situations. By learning these life-saving skills, participants are empowered to respond confidently and effectively to cardiac emergencies, potentially saving lives and minimizing the impact of sudden cardiac arrest in their communities.
